The Vortex

Chapter 2

To the esoteric Pagan seer who hears the Muses Call, the cosmos is a whirlpool, a maelstrom, the cosmic Vortex which encompasses our boundless universe. Like wheels within wheels it was seen to turn in every direction, giving order to chaos.

The mystic looks into the night sky and sees the maelstrom of creation, while the astronomer looks with rational eyes and sees our own spiral galaxy. The mystic sees in Andromeda the vortic monster which menaced that Ethiopian1 princess at the dawn of time; the astronomer sees only swirling stars. In Orion the mystic sees an undefined esoteric energy controlled by the Giants of Power, and finds the Pathway of the Spirits; in Cancer is seen the cage of the spirits, the haunt of the dead who are bound to earth; the astronomer focusing on either constellation will see only a cloud nebula. The higher mystic sees in Sirius2 the confounding of worlds where the lesser rules the greater and the vortex of unseen fateful change which encompasses them both; the astronomer sees twin stars, the smaller being greater in mass than the larger, and never comprehends the unseen force which surrounds them. Looking inward the mystic sees the shadows of a variable vortex; the physicist grasps a fleeting moment of the atom's sub atomic particles. From the microcosm to the macrocosm the mystic understands the Vortices as patterns of the universe and man--like above, so below; as in heaven, so on earth--while the turning of the Vortex in Spiritual Fluid produces the ebb and flow that is the origin of cause and effect for all phenomena in our terrestrial and every system.

The Great Mysteries of Isis, Dionysus, Eleusinian and the later Pythagorean, Orphic and Hermetic Mysteries all taught that the swirling of cosmic matter was the eddying and flux of Spiritual Matter, the cosmic fire which in ancient myth was seen to circle the earth from the heavenly realms of the North to the dark realms of the House of Death in the South.

It was by this mystical Cosmic Fire that the earth was destroyed and renewed with the passing of each age and from which is born a new heaven and a new earth3. The Cosmic Fire was seen as the mythical Vortex of change emanating from Spiritual Fluid which gives rise to the Vortex of Fate, which is that situation into which persons or things are steadily drawn, and from which they, like ships pulled into the Maelstrom, cannot escape; and the Vortex of Emotions with its increasing round of excitement or pleasure.

The Egyptians saw the cosmic Vortex as Nu, the primordial waters of creation from which the galaxies and solar systems of the universe were created. But it was the earthly Vortices which controlled their lives. The ancient Egyptians professed a knowledge of the workings of the vortic fields through which they could see the future, control the elements and not only control the spirits, but commune with the Gods. The Egyptians believed that during their mortal lives they could gain knowledge that would allow their spirits to make the perilous journey from the world of the dead to the heavens where the immortal Gods lived. It was the Vortices which gave the Priestesses of Isis their magic and power over death.

The ancients exoteric4 practices of levitation, mind reading, thought transfer, clairvoyance, distant clairvoyance and seeing the profane past and future were mental phenomenon which were only incidental to the spiritual knowledge of the world's past, present and future. The Magnetists of the 18th century who rediscovered, or rather were taught these practices, understood them to be mental aspects of their physical nature. They also knew that these higher phenomenon, as they were called, had little or nothing to do with the spiritual, or the world of the dead. However in the following century, the higher phenomenon of the magnetists would become the illusionary paradigm of the Spiritualist movement. Today these phenomenon are beyond the highest levels of psychic researchers who now claim them to have been frauds and imagination. But modern ignorance does not make history a fraud, and unlike the Egyptian's whose knowledge of Spiritual Matter gave them control of the Spirits who held the keys to earthly power and access to eternal life, modern psychic researchers have for the most part rejected the esoteric knowledge of the past.

This leads to the obvious questions, if ancient esoteric knowledge really existed, how did the ancients come by it? How was it lost? And why can it not be regained today? Having, myself, received that ancient knowledge, I know that it was not just a wraithful hope. Though I readily admit that most of what is presented as ancient knowledge and mysticism is nothing more than fable and wishful imagination. Modern books on the occult and so-called black art, are filled with ignorance.

However, amid all the exaggeration and pure fantasy, the writers of antiquity sometimes gave a spark of esoteric knowledge; though too often it is illuminating only to the adept. But one thing is certain, the principle by which esoteric knowledge is gained has remained unchanged from the beginning of time. The process is the same today as it was 2,600 years ago, or 16,000 years ago, or 150,000 years ago. Knowing how and why that knowledge was lost is the key to its restoration. Understanding this will not only require a change in thinking, but a rejection of the prejudices and ignorance that cloak the Lies of History.

It helps that throughout history, there have been spattering of visions to guide the seeker on a path that will lead to the Gods. But vision is only illuminating when there is knowledge by which it can be understood.

NOTES:

1   In Greek myth, Andromeda was the daughter of Cassiopeia and Cepheus, the Egyptian King of Ethiopia. She was not black as modern African Americans pretend, but rather a xanthochroid (blonde, blue-eyed, light complexion) Andromeda married Perseus and her first son, Perses, became the Eponymous (who gives the name to) father of the Persians. Perseus and Andromeda migrated to Europe and built Mycenae.

The Persians, who did not accept Greek myth were origianally xanthochroid, (as were all Aryans) and at the time of the conquest by Alexander the Great, he became so tired of seeing so many captive blue-eyed blond women paraded before him that he refused to look at another Persian woman.

2   Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, located in the Constellation, Canis Major, and rises modernly just before the sun on August 7, in Los Angeles. It is a double star with the small star orbiting the larger in a little over 50 years. According to Robert Burnham, Jr's Celestial Handbook, the small star is believed to be a "white dwarf" which has the same mass as our sun but is 40-50 times smaller, with a density 125,000 times that of water. To put that in perspective, a single cubic inch of Sirius "B" would weigh over two tons. The Egyptians say there are three stars, two of which are visible, and it is the third invisible star which holds the key to time. Modern astrological observations indicate that there may indeed be a third unseen star.
3   The Jews and christians who were ignorant of mythical symbolism did not understand the destruction of the "Ages of Man" and the "passing of the world by Cosmic Fire". Instead they interpret the destruction of the earth to be by actual, profane fire. They do not realize that since the introduction of Christianity there has already been a new heaven and the new earth is about to evolve, leaving them in their own world of ignorance.
4   Exoteric, is knowledge which is suitable for the uninitiated, or outer circle, as compared to esoteric which is understood by the Initiate.
